Changing Your Hairstyle
Take a look in the mirror. Have you been wearing the same hairstyle for more than a year, it's time to change things up. I recommend changing your hairstyle annually -- the New Year, a birthday, a breakup, a job promotion, or any other big life event is a great time to change your hairstyle.
Many guys get into the habit of thinking that their haircut works, so why change it? Just because something is working doesn't mean a change won't do you good. Changing your hairstyle is a great way to freshen things up, not only for yourself, but for those around you. When you show up looking the same way every day, people tend to stop noticing, but changing your look once in awhile keeps things fresh and will get you noticed. Another reason to change your hairstyle, especially if you haven't done it in years, is because, with time, your face changes (it may get slimmer or wider, depending on the way your body and weight fluctuate over the years). Since your hairstyle frames your face, it is important to make sure the frame always fits.
So, you're going to change your hairstyle. Where do you start? Follow these five tips on changing your hairstyle the right way.
1) Take a look at what is trendy. Knowing how to stay ahead of men's hair trends is essential to keeping your look fresh. The best way I've found to discover new trends is to check out what's happening across the pond. Many men's hair trends start in the U.K. and work their way to us a year or two later. If you can't hop on a plane and jet across the ocean, take a look at some of the international versions of magazines such as GQ or any number of other men's fashion magazines.
2) Discover what works for you. Of course, that trendy pompadour with a bushy beard may not be appropriate for you, so it's important to take your job and lifestyle into consideration. For example, if you are athletic or don't want to spend time styling every day, a low-maintenance hairstyle such as a buzzcut or classic taper may be in order. Those who have more time or work in a creative field may wish to choose something a little longer with some facial hair.
3) Know what is appropriate for you. Sometimes, what you want and what you should be wearing don't always match, so it is important to know your face shape and take into account how a hairstyle can balance facial features. For example, a full or round hairstyle will make a round face appear fat.
4) Ask around. First, talk to your barber or stylist who is trained to know what types of styles will work with your facial features and hair type. Never be afraid to ask for suggestions. Next, talk to your spouse or friends and find out what they think you should do (you may be surprised by what they say).
5) Get over the fear of change. Now that you've armed yourself with some knowledge and have talked to your barber or stylist, it's time to take the plunge. Most guys don't change up their style because they're afraid of change. I have a client I'm trying to move in a new direction, but he just won't budge. This guys skis, sky dives, rafts, and all sorts of adventurous activities, but I just can't seem to convince him that getting a new haircut is far less risky. It's only hair and will always grow back. Keep that in mind -- if you don't like the change, you can always go back to your old style.
Changing your hairstyle will give you new perspective, freshen things up, and get you noticed. Book an appointment and change up that look. You'd be surprised how much good a little change can do.
